Comment on the quotation:

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

  1. Well, It's quite true, 'cause animals are pearls of this world and without 'em our life will be gray and dull. More importanly is the question how people are treated in the modern world. World leaders should take care of both people and animals. But of course we should treat animals like treasure of this planet, without 'em we shall perish.Modern barbarians hunt and kill animals for fun. They are cold-blooded assassins and shoulbe dealth with without mercy

  2. It's difficult to comment this statement. But the nation shows its attitude to itself throng its attitude to animals. If it doesn't care about animals it can't pay enough attention to each other.I think each person should have a pet, and should learn to be more responsible for his or her pet, if a child can learn to do in his childhood and when he'll grow up he/she may be more better, warmer humane with his relatives, friends and others.Because earning for animals helps people not to be cruel it learns to protect them, from different trouble.
"We become responsible forever for what we have tamed" as the fox said "The Little Prince " Antonie de Saint Excepery's best book.

  3. Very powerful and very symbolical judgement! It was pleasant to me so madly ! I completely agree with it!
Where have those times when people worshipped to animals gone to? I'm speaking not about fanaticism and about a certain sanctity, an identification of terrestrial creations with extraterrestrial, divine.
Let's remember ancient Egypt. In Egypt the cat was a sacred animal. The most mysterious creation which can't be tamed.
And Egyptians were one of the most powerful nations in days of old.

In Africa a sacred animal is the crocodile, in India a cow. Also as well as mother the Earth, a cow is a symbol of a principle of disinterested sacrifice.

I consider such usages, such customs, such tribute to the nature, it is wonderful. After all people all only take and take, leaving nothing in exchange. Such, let not everywhere remained foundations, don't allow a society to be beyond immorality.

  5. I don't agree with this statement. To my mind there are a lot of more important things and reasons with help of which we can judge our moral progress. And an attitude to animals isn't the main indicator of the greatness of the nation. First of all we should appreciate relations between people. If the nation consists of civilized people, which respect of each other they, without dispute, will love and take care of animals, our younger brothers.

  6. I also don't agree with this statement. The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its POOR people are treated. Better to think about other problems like poverty of people, lack of medicine.... Only after we solve human problems, we should pay more attention to animals.
But I don't say we must forget about them. I think the problem of homeless or ill animals should be under control of public organosations or volunteer organisations. Obviously, some funds must be done by government.

  7. To my mind it is true. Our attitude to animals reflects our attitude to a planet as our home. If we do not appreciate a life of our smaller brothers we can not be called as the nation with high moral principles. Animals are always weaker than we. It is possible to speak about greatness of the nation only when we help and protect animals.

  8. I totally agree with an Indian philosopher!!!

In my humble opinion the measure of a civilization is how society (people, I mean) treats its defenseless members (animals, children, disadvantaged people). The culture and the spirituality of every nation are determined by humane attitude to animals and it goes without saying to humans.

Once I’ve came across the King’s Solomon quotation which said “A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.” I think it’s harsh reality of the world of today. The humanity is the main way to live in harmonious world where people are happy and animals too. This sounds quite simple but dang it!!! so hard to perform…

  9. I do not agree with this statement. I think, that the attitude of people towards each other it's more important, because if sometimes people can not stretch out a helping hand to another, then what we can say about the attitude of this man to animals?!?!
I agree with Masha, if in the country live civilized people, they would be treated with respect for each other and to our younger brothers.

  10. I do agree with the statement, but with some "but": we're responsible for animals (who can't protect themselves) and also, as Artem wisely mentioned, about poor and ill, who're completely helpless in face of danger and hunger...
The animals can't betray but they can't share your love like human beings...
There's an old Chinese legend about an old monk and a horse. When people from savage tribe destroyed a Chinese monastery and slaughtered the monks, they found the oldest and the wisest monk and a horse (an old one too) and blinded them. For a long time the blind man and the blind animal roamed side by side through the plains and mountains - the monk grasped the mane of the horse. Finally, the moon goddess felt pity for the couple and approached them with a question: "Tell me, mortal one, who do you wish me to return sight? You or your horse?" And the monk asked her to return sight to the horse, as he said only horse deserved good treatment as he was faithful and honest with the world...
P.S. The goddess returned sight to both of them.
